Attn: Christian Metalheads- I need your help for a project!
Hi there! My name is Todd, and I am a graduate student at Loyola University in Chicago. I am studying the sociology of religion and am beginning a project studying the Christian metal subculture. For this project I will be doing three things:
1) Analyzing lyrics, news, blogs, and message boards about both Christian metal and secular metal to compare them,
2) Undertaking a history of Christian metal to place it in context, and
3) Interviewing fans and bands of Christian metal.
Currently, I am in two classes where I will be using this information. After these classes, I hope to get approval to continue this research and turn it into a larger project.
I would love the opportunity to interview any fans of Christian metal. I would also be very grateful to anyone who could point me in the direction of Christian metal bands in Chicago. I only know of a handful.
Feel free to post here or send me a message if you are interested.
Thanks very much, and I hope to hear from you all!

Re: Attn: Christian Metalheads- I need your help for a project!
hello
Well, this is still a pretty small forum as of yet., and new. But there are three "metal bands" or members of three Christian Metal bands I know of that post here from time to time..
Myself, Ash... Opus Majestic (US band)
Jonas, Robin... Admonish (Swedish band)
Matt.... Blood Drift (Belgium band)..
What classes are you in where interviewing bands and fans of a genre is a projeckt? Sounds like a cool class.

i think you should check the endtime message board.
http://www.nordicfest.no/forum/
it's down from time to time though... i hope it will get better after the software upgrade...
there's another great forum at tavern.unblack.com, but in german. most of the people there speak english though.
there's also someone that's in the process of writing a book about the history of christian metal. his name is trevor ray, more information about him here: http://www.historyofmetal.10gbfreehost.com/
and there's a documentary about christian black metal called "light in darkness - nemesis divina". it hasn't been released on dvd yet, but it should get released during the next few months. see the trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05IElsPRDHs
cheers.
ps: are you a christian too, or are you just doing research about it?

Re: Attn: Christian Metalheads- I need your help for a project!
Thanks so much for your replies! I really appreciate you pointing me in the direction of the book and documentary.
To answer your question about myself, I am personally not a Christian, but I've always been very interested in Christian metal (I grew up on secular metal, and thought it was really interesting that Christian metal even existed when I first heard about it). I was shocked to find that there's not research in the sociology of religion on the subculture. It seems like something that's both interesting and worthwhile to study. How does being involved in this community shape people's lives and faith? Those sorts of questions.
Because I have a knowledge of metal in general and am very interested in the sociology of religion, I feel I'm kind of in a unique place to interview Christian metal. I really hope to come to an understanding of how being in the community affects people's lives and what they get out of being a member of the community.
So thanks again for getting back to me. This is going to be a long project and I'm happy to have help.
I've noticed that a lot of people who post here are European. Is there anyone posting here in America? Much as I would love to trek through Europe interviewing people, it's probably out of my budget right now!

Re: Attn: Christian Metalheads- I need your help for a project!
I'm American, and I play metal, but I actual don't really listen to metal very often at all anymore.. instead, just pretty much classical or electronic musik.
I listened to metal almost exclusively for around 10 or 11 years and my tastes evolved elsewhere.

interesting. i apreciate your effort!
as mentioned before, probably the best source for information is the endtime message board (http://nordicfest.no/forum) as well as the (german-speaking) unblack tavern (http://tavern.unblack.com). feel free to post in english in the latter one, people will understand.

I believe he stated that he wanted some people in the US to interview in person, because of financial limits. But of course, Europa has the Troooo metal heads.
