That's the external jugular vein right there.

Here's the other vessels to and from the head, just like in a human.
Of course pigs have necks, they are only more robust than many other animal necks.

may i also remind you that your pic is of a very much modern pink domesticated pig. both veggies, korn and animals went trough a dramatic change when humans domesticated them in mesopotamia during mesolithic stoneage.

It doesn't matter much that the pig in question has a really fat neck. The same arteries and veins are still there, so it is possible to kill it in a kosher/halal way.

Not that the American meat industry ever slaughters any animals in the Kosher/Halal way...*barf*

Well, as a vegetarian, I cannot defend the American meat/poultry industry. But, from all the info I have heard, they feed the animals junk food which is passed on to you when you eat them. Eat meat if you must, but at least do it in a somewhat natural way. There is no reason to torture the animals and produce less than quality food to eat.

Other than $$$$$$$ ( the american way), I don't really understand the gain from America's meat industry today?

The Kosher/Halal way is more humane (the animals die faster and *hopefully* less painfully)than the typical US meat industry-owned slaughter house ways.

Hopefully we're not stealing the Favorite Meat thread, but I think if people want to eat meat, they should at least purchase it from farmer's markets or somewhere they know the animals were well-cared for**, or even hunt their own food. Hunting is more humane than the meat industry.

**'Food' animals need to be well-cared for, not just cuz it hurts the feelings of us bleeding heart animal lovers when animals are treated bad, but if a cow or any other animal is fed crap and is in bad health, then you're gonna be eating sick, crap-filled meat.

In less preachy news, I hope all you fellow Yanks have a great Thanksgiving day feast, no matter what your favorite feast meat is! ...And more importantly, be thankful for it! Cheers! cheers

Yep, bleeding to death is one of the fastest, least painful ways to die. Much faster and lest agonizing then say.. suffocation or of course.. disease.

have you ever seen no country for old men? that how they kill your hamburger... one snap on the button, your dead, no time to even realize what happened. getting your jugular cut... sure you get all numb so you don't feel that much but it still painful.
whats bad about the meat industry is not the way they finally kill, but before they kill. how they treat their animals... thats the nasty part.

A little correction...they don't just cut the jugular vein, since dying that way would take ½ hour at least. At a halal/kosher slaughter they cut the throat totally, most importantly cutting the internal and external carotid arteries. The difference between that and a "normal" slaughter is that the animal is stunned with a bolt pistol before cutting the throat, which makes it unconcious instantly. I just read that in a good halal/kosher slaughter the animal will be uncouncious in 6-8 seconds. You chose, at once or 8 seconds later?

Well, I know with a human.. like in combat.. when you get hit somewhere involving an artery, it is known that you can be dead in 4 minutes if the bleeding isn't restricted really fast.

Yeah, if it involves the aorta or carotid arteries you can be dead even faster.
