Things that don't make sense...???
" border="0" />
This is from an ashtray sitting on my porch (no, I don't smoke but one of my roomies do...eww). What is going on with this snail? Can they get addicted to nicotine too? Perhaps he just wanted a soft place to sleep? Phillip Morris has found a new crowd to market to!!

Great picture.
Maybe snails get some sort of buzz off the chemicals?

Re: Things that don't make sense...???
By not finishing all those cigarettes, her roomie has to go out and buy more and is thus stimulating the economy; it is a America-hating Communist who would think otherwise!
I love snails.
I love snails.
Re: Things that don't make sense...???
The roommate in question is female not male, that is prolly the main reason for the half-smoked smokes and why most of them appear to be "light" cigs of some sort.
As a smoker, she is one of many costing the public billions each year in medical costs, so she would be a socialist, no?
This still does not explain the curious actions of the snail!

Actually, smoker = shorter projected lifespan = LOWER costs. There've been studies done.

I don't know, I had a grand father in law that lived to like 89 years of age, smoking a pack a day.
Re: Things that don't make sense...???
Well, I don't know if we are saving money since people are dying earlier but I do know this is a fact (but of course we could say the same on many issues and how people knowingly don't take of themselves and make the rest of us pay for it)
but...
according to consumer affairs...and this is just a portion of the article...
"According to the research, New York smokers top the list, costing
Medicaid $1.5 billion each year. Wyoming had the least Medicaid
expenditures due to current smokers, but they still cost the program
$15 million each year. The report showed that North Carolinians who
smoke cost Medicaid $294 million each year."

Yeah, but is that really because of smoking-related health problems, or something else? Remember, correlation =/= causation.
Also, obesity costs more than smoking.

Re: Things that don't make sense...???
well, it's interesting cause I have asthma. And cigarette smoke sparks up my breathing problems... but when I lived at a friends house, his dad used to smoke some natural pipe tobacco.. and I never had any asthma problems from it. Must be some of the modern additives they use in cigaretttes that really gets me.

The article I mentioned was specifically talking about medical issues caused by smoking, not so much other issues. I agree, on the obesity issue, which is why I mentioned that smoking is obviously not the only way people are knowingly creating preventable medical problems.
Most cigs are loaded with chemicals. Pipes, depending on what you are smoking of course, are prolly not packed with killer chemicals like cigs...But that is just a guess, I don't know much about pipe smoking tobacco.

Re: Things that don't make sense...???
I smoke a pipe sometimes.
There are also cigarettes that aren't filled with nasty additives, chemicals, etc. Of course, that doesn't mean they're good for you, but still.

Some of those look rather appetizing, actually. Apple juice... Cocoa... Cinnamon... om nom nom nom nom
Seriously, though. I KNOW. Cigarettes aren't good for you. Dang... neither are greasy hamburgers or loud music or long walks in the rain or breathing smog-filled California air. Or much of anything else, for that matter.
Sure, you can abstain from all tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine, live on cardboard and water, jog seventy miles a day, and breathe only the purest of mountain air, and you'll probably live to be 108 years old or whatever. But you'll still die, and you won't have had nearly as much fun as me
(awaits the inevitable "WELL, lung canther thertainly ithn't my idea of fun")

well there is pipe tobacco thats sprayed with perfume and all kinds of nasty sheisse, but there is also alot of pure tobaccos straight from teh leaf. i find it interesting to see pipe smokers often get pretty old, at lest if you compare to those that smoke ciggs.
just take tolkien and his gang, they lived to be pretty old compared to the average lifespan back then. and they smoked ALOT.... we are probably talking minimum one or two fills a day. Lewis did die of sickness but it was not cancer.

so true... i don't care for old age, when i can't care for myself anymore i wanna die, no stupid fudge is gonna wipe my butt. i wanna drink what i like, smoke what i like, say what i want, and then die before the brain starts falling apart.
the oldest person in my family that died while i was old enough to remember was my dads grandpa. i never met my moms grandpa, but her half of the family is the part that i have gotten most of my looks and personality from, and i think i might have had alot in common with him, mom says my room smells just like his did, pipe tobacco, oilpaint and dusty books/stuff everywhere. he walked straight into a lake when he felt he was starting to loose it and neither he wanted to have his butt wiped. if i get that old, maybe i'll honor his memory

Well, I definitely don't abstain from anything in particular...Caffeine, wine, beer and water are necessary for me to function in life. Ash can tell you, I drink wine every chance I get, I love the stuff. At least I got lucky that wine is good for you in certain ways.
As a vegetarian, I don't have the option of a greasy burger but I certainly enjoy all sorts bad foods...
It is more a matter of moderation more so than the actual food, drink or vice in question...
I do exercise. But, I feel 3000x better when I do it. So, I enjoy that every bit as much as a glass of wine. At the same time, I got rid of my car and got a bicycle. Everywhere I go, is by bike...work, shopping or whatever...San Diego is valleys and mountains, so the ride isn't exactly easy a lot of the time. So, I cannot really avoid exercise. I enjoy riding a bike so much more than the car.
I am more concerned with quality of life while I am here not living forever. I don't understand how it is fun for people who are so out of shape they can't walk up a hill or touch there toes. Or people with severe medical issues they brought on themselves and are constantly in pain or suffering.
As for smoking, well...that is just fine, in moderation just like anything else. Pipe tobacco is enjoyable, but cigs don't seem to offer anything. Therefore I don't get what the appeal of smoking is, as in people who smoke packs a day and such. At least with beer, it tastes good and makes you tipsy.
How did a random pic of a snail turn into all this??

Re: Things that don't make sense...???
Heh, good post. I got a little annoyed back there, sorry... everyone tells me I shouldn't be smoking IRL, even though I don't do it very often.
Just so you know, I'm not some kind of fat, debauched slob...
I'm actually starting back onto a pescatarian diet after a bit of a hiatus. I looked back and realized that I've felt awful eating red meat. I was a vegetarian for a while as well, and certainly can't speak ill of the lifestyle.
If I didn't have to drive to work, I'd probably walk nearly everywhere. I live in a beautiful, historic, and extremely pedestrian-friendly area of town.
I don't drink as often or in as large amounts as I used to. Mostly just a beer after work. I do love tobacco, though, in all its forms apart from snuff. I smoke a pipe, hookah sometimes, and cigarettes sometimes. They all have different appeals to me- sometimes I want one, sometimes I want another. As a former pack-a-day smoker, though, I have to be careful sometimes.
I understand where you're coming from on quality of life. If I do get old, I want to be spry and smart, not feeble and weak. How best to go about achieving said spryness, though, is something I'm going to have to work on.
Thus ends my ramble.

Rambling is a good thing...it shows passion of some sort...better than having no opinion, no?
I don't think everyone has to be a vegetarian necessarily but I would advise that people research where the meat is coming from and how it is processed...Some of the info might shock you. I just have a lot of compassion for all creatures on earth and don't think I need meat to survive, which is why I am a veggie.
I understand pipes and hookah, they have so many flavors to offer and neither are usually smoked all day long. Cigs are fun every now and then, but don't really seem to offer much, other than a "fix".
Riding a bike is most definitely great. I have a totally different perspective on my surrounding. It is amazing how much small detail you miss speeding around in a car. Stupid little things, like certain plants, trees, alley ways, and so on...Best thing about it, is the small amount of time I get to be outside and "free" and able to wonder around and breath some air.
